Workers Ignore Data Rules

Source: InformationWeek (02/05/07) Keizer, Gregg

The results of a recent poll by McAfee found that the majority of workers, 84 percent, adhere to data security rules, but one in five admit to leaving confidential documents in a common printer, and a similar number admit to lending portable devices with sensitive information to co-workers. Another survey found that out of the workers who transport customer data out of the office, 88 percent use email, with 23 percent of that group using less-secure Web browser-based email. Nearly four out of 10 workers said they bring up to 10 documents out of the office every week, with 41 percent using laptops, 22 percent using USB flash drives, and 13 percent using CDs. McAfee's Vimal Solanki says policy and technology focused on outside attacks is insufficient to protect from data loss as sensitive corporate data can be deliberately or accidentally lost by employee behavior.
