Mobile Attacks Jumped Fivefold in 2006, Study Says

The number of mobile phone operators who reported security attacks in 2006 increased fivefold from the previous year, reports a new McAfee study. The study questioned over 200 mobile operators worldwide, and found that 83 percent said their subscribers had been the victims of some kind of attack against their mobile devices. Mobile phone providers said they were most concerned about preserving their reputations and maintaining quality customer service, with particular concern for the reliability of new transaction- and content-based services such as music downloads. Widespread attacks on mobile devices have not become as prevalent as some have predicted, as only 15 percent of attacks involved between 1,000 and 100,000 devices. However, the limited size of the attacks did not stop McAfee's Victor Kouznetsov from saying the results of the research demonstrates the rising importance of mobile security.
