Websites Wide Open to Attack
Seven out of every 10 Web sites contain a security vulnerability that could be exploited by hackers to steal information or shut down the Web site, according to a new security study. The study searched 3,200 Web sites belonging to businesses or non-commercial organizations that volunteered, and found 210,000 vulnerabilities, averaging 66 flaws per online application. Half of the vulnerabilities were SQL injection flaws, which allow hackers to send commands in the SQL database access language, and 42 percent were Cross Site Scripting vulnerabilities, which hackers use to submit JavaScript or another code to steal past orders such as credit card information or passwords. The study's author says the results clearly show that unsafe web applications are being completely ignored.
